If you've never been in a shared housing program before, the word "independent living" can sound like jargon. Here's the plain version.

Independent living is a structured, supportive form of shared housing for adults who can take care of themselves day-to-day, but who benefit from the safety net and steadiness of a managed community. Think of it as the middle ground between a private rental and a shelter: more privacy and dignity than a shelter, more support and stability than a typical rental.

What it is

A program like ours is built around three quiet ideas:

That structure is what makes it work for the people the rest of the system tends to miss.

What it isn't

Just as important: independent living isn't a few things people sometimes assume.

Why people choose it

For most participants, independent living solves a stack of small problems at once. The unit is furnished, so you don't need to buy a bed. WiFi and cable are included, so you don't need to set them up. Common areas are monitored, so you don't have to wonder about safety. There's a resource wall with local job leads and partner agencies on it, so you don't have to start from zero.

Each of those would be a small thing on its own. Stacked together, they let people focus on what they actually moved here to do: rebuild.

Who it's for

Adults with stable income (a job, SSI, SSDI, or VA benefits), 18 or older, who can live independently and follow the program rules. We work especially closely with single mothers rebuilding stability, alongside veterans, returning citizens, and other neighbors who need a steady door of their own.
